Principles of Municipal Solid Waste Pyrolysis
Pyrolysis of municipal solid waste is the process of decomposing organic matter into small molecular compounds by heating (300°C-800°C) in an oxygen-free or oxygen-limited environment. Organic components in municipal solid waste (such as plastics, paper, and food residues) undergo chemical bond breakage during pyrolysis.

How Does MSW Pyrolysis Plants Work?
- Municipal solid waste pretreatment: MSW is sorted, crushed and dried. During this process, inorganic matter (such as metals, glass) and moisture are removed to improve the efficiency of pyrolysis.
- Pyrolysis reactor: The pretreated waste is sent to the MSW pyrolysis reactor and heated under oxygen-free or oxygen-limited conditions.
- Product separation and collection: The MSW pyrolysis gas is separated into pyrolysis oil through a condensation system, and the remaining gas can be used for energy recovery after purification. Pyrolysis char is discharged from the bottom of the reactor and collected after cooling.
- Gas purification and emission control: A small amount of harmful gases (such as HCl, SO₂) may be produced during the pyrolysis process. These gases need to be treated by a purification system to ensure that the emissions meet environmental standards.
